What is a no-scalpel vasectomy?
A no-scalpel vasectomy is a modern male sterilisation surgical technique and is much less invasive than the standard vasectomy procedure. Instead of making a large incision, the doctor uses a special instrument to make a small puncture. Through this opening in the scrotum, the tube that carries the sperm from the testicles, the vas deferens, is accessed and tied, cut, or sealed off to prevent sperm from reaching the semen.
What are the benefits of no-scalpel vasectomy?
The procedure has many benefits including:-
- Quick procedure taking 20-30 minutes.
- Little to no downtime.
- Simpler with fewer complications and quicker recovery than a standard vasectomy procedure.
Is no-scalpel vasectomy painful?
The no-scalpel vasectomy procedure is an almost pain free procedure, where a very fine needle is used to numb the skin. Throughout the procedure your doctor will talk to you, to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. You may experience a little discomfort after surgery, but most patients can resume their normal daily duties straight away. We recommend you avoid strenuous exercise for five days following the vasectomy and refrain from any sexual activity for two weeks.
Will I be sterile straight away?
It takes a minimum of 20 ejaculations to clear any sperm that are left in your system. In the meantime you should use another form of birth control until you have had your semen tested and you receive the results that your semen is free from sperm. Semen will be tested about 12 weeks following the procedure.
