The Contraceptive Coil, also known as an intrauterine device (IUD), is a long-term form of contraception which can provide up to 10 years of protection from pregnancy. It works by preventing fertilisation and blocking the sperm from reaching the egg. It also releases a low dose of hormones to prevent ovulation in some models.
The coil has many advantages over other methods of contraception. It is highly effective, with a failure rate less than 1%. This means that it is one of the most reliable forms of contraception available. It’s also convenient and reversible – so you can stop using it when you are ready to have children. The coil also has no effect on your fertility after you remove it, so you can get pregnant quickly after removing it.
At Sunningdale Private GP clinic, we offer two types of coil: the non-hormonal copper coil and the hormonal Mirena coil. The copper coils are considered to be a natural form of contraception as they do not contain any hormones, but instead work by preventing the sperm from reaching the egg. They can last up to 10 years and are less likely than other methods of contraception to cause side effects.
The Mirena coil contains a small amount of progesterone, which is released slowly into the uterus in order to prevent pregnancy. These coils must be replaced every 5 years and are known to reduce menstrual cramps and bleeding. This makes them an ideal choice for women who suffer from heavy or painful periods.
When you come to Sunningdale Private GP clinic for a Contraceptive Coil fitting or removal, our highly trained nurses will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the procedure and offer advice on the best type of coil for you. We also provide counselling and sexual health services to ensure that you are well informed about contraception options, so that you can make an informed choice about the best one for your needs.

Why you may need an IUD/IUS (coil) insertion and removal
The IUD (intrauterine device, or coil) is a small T-shaped device that’s put into your womb (uterus) by a specialist doctor or nurse. At the Private GP Clinic we have a number of experienced professionals who will discuss the benefits and risks along with what the procedure involves, in a discreet and comfortable treatment room.
Coils can be either plastic or copper, hormone or non-hormone.
IUD/IUS coils are an effective form of contraception and can last for many years. The IUS (intrauterine system) although similar to the IUD releases the hormone, progestogen in the womb, whereas the IUD releases copper.
When can you have a coil fitted?
As long as you are not pregnant, the coil can be fitted and removed at any time during your menstrual cycle.
How does an IUD/IUS coil work?
An IUD coil is a small plastic and copper device that is placed in the uterus (womb). The copper IUD prevents the sperm from surviving and changes the mucus from the cervix, preventing sperm from reaching the egg. The IUD is effective as soon as it is inserted and it lasts from 5-10 years.
The copper coil is a non-hormonal form of contraception, can be used during breastfeeding and is not affected by other medications.
Once the coil is removed fertility will return to normal.
The hormonal coil (IUS) is a small plastic T-shaped device containing the hormone progesterone, there are different devices available which vary in size and the amount of hormone. The duration of a hormonal coil is 3-5 years.
The IUS is a very effective form of contraception, by thinning the lining of the uterus it prevents the fertilised egg to implant. By thickening the mucus from the cervix, it makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.
Advantages of the IUS include less painful lighter periods and its effectiveness is not impacted by other medications.
